Explain the National Debt in laymen's terms?

I need someone to explain the National Debt in Laymen terms. I am having problems being able to understand this. What is the National Debt? Who are we borrowing the money from and why are they continuing to allow us to borrow it? If it is just a debt the United States incurred in itself then why are we not able to cancel it? Help Please!
