What is a good material for a backdrop?

A sheet will do for a white background (good for babies), just get a couple of poles and some clips. Otherwise curtain material with a restrained pattern or a single colour - try charity shops. Dark or light is according to your own taste. Try to have the background well behind the subjects, then it will go out of focus, especially if you open the aperture to close to max. Indeed you need to diffuse your flash, preferably have one or more studio-type flashes off the camera - flash on camera is not good for portraits. Filters should not be needed, but you could try a diffuser filter that leaves a clear central spot - put clear spot over the face, then crop later in the computer.
