Using a diffuser on straight hair?

I have a blow-dryer that has a diffuser attachment. I have been trying to get that messy, wavy look that's perfect for the beach; however, I have pin-straight hair and whenever I use it with the diffuser, I get a rat's nest. What can I do to get those nice waves with a diffuser?
